Haiku

In March, Mr. Fontenot taught the students some of the history of Haikus and how a Haiku is formatted.  He worked with each child individually to help them mold their very own Haiku, challenging them to think of different ways to tell a story.  Please enjoy their creations.

Turned out to be a dragon

It had bat-like wings

Scaly skin of green

Big grey talons, demon eyes

Head of long, straight horns

Red, orange and yellow fire

In the mountain lair

MY FRIENDS

By K.H.

I’m glad for my friends

They make me laugh, they’re my friends

I’m a happy girl

At school, met my friends

They always give me big hugs

They are fun and nice

Creative Writing

Later in the year, we expanded the creative writing idea and asked the students to write about their year here at Aurora Strategies.  We worked with them as a class and individually to help them craft a creative paragraph or two about their experiences at school.  The students were encouraged to write or tell about some of the things they liked learning the most, some of their favorite memories, and what they will miss the most during summer vacation.  The following writings are your children’s words; they are typed as they wrote them almost verbatim.  A few ideas were moved within the paragraph to help with cohesion, and spelling mistakes were fixed; otherwise, these stories are the voices of your children.

I liked reading Ruby Holler and taking turns reading.  I liked switching to different books.  I met a horse named Dallas at my grandmother’s farm down the street.  The horse was very active and smart.  Dallas was the name of the boy in Ruby Holler.  I liked learning about reading and answering questions, and using my structure words.  I liked my math class too; I liked doing division and multiplication facts.

I liked learning about different countries and cultures.  I liked going to China in social studies.  We learned about Chinese numbers and how they looked like, and about their language.  I learned about gunpowder and the abacus and the compass and how the Chinese invented printing paper and fireworks.  I also learned in science that it is important to learn about health.  In yoga I learned that it is good for you, and that it is good to work together.

I liked going on the field trip to Stone Mountain.  I think it was very funny when Mr. Clay dressed as a ballerina with blond hair and a purple ballerina suit.  It was for the Halloween party at Aurora.  Everyone felt silly, and everyone was laughing.  The thing I will miss the most is hanging out with my friends.

I will miss being with my friends and learning new things.  I liked IM because it was fun clapping and stomping and stuff like that.  I liked art with Mr. Dirk. And I liked African dancing with Mr. Arnold.

I read Ruby Holler with Mae. The story was fun and had good people in it.

In math class I learned how to tell time.  Mr. Arnold, London, Mae, Katie, Marc, and Landon were in class with me, and we learned Chinese numbers, emperors, and different facts about China.  We learned about China because of the Olympic Games.

In Biofeedback we learned how to calm down, to have energy, and about different ways to breathe.  In science, I liked how Mr. Arnold taught us first aid and to be safe.  The most fun thing I did this year was Aurora Olympics; I did the bear walk and Frisbee throw and the shuttle run.  The thing I will miss most during the summer is Mr. Arnold because he is funny.

My favorite computer game was Fast ForWord Reading 1 and Literacy.  I liked checking my graphs on the computer.  I liked the spelling bee in LiPS.

I liked learning division in the classroom with Mr. Arnold.  I was talking to my friends about math, and the kids were happy about math!  One day we went to Stone Mountain.  We rode on a train.  The train went around the mountain and my friends and I could see trees and the carvings.  We also rode on the sky lift to the top of the mountain!  There were two rocks.  It was foggy and rainy and we could see clouds.  We went on the mountain.   I liked learning about China and how to count in Chinese.  I liked learning about the Great Wall of China.  I learned about China because the Olympic Games are in China this year.

I will miss my friends.  I will miss eating lunch at school the most because we always got to eat outside, and we played games like soccer.  We ate on the grass like a picnic.  We sat together in a group and ate, talked, and laughed.

I learned about cats and kittens in V&V.  I wrote a haiku about cats with Mr. Dirk.  I learned time.  I learned times tables, I learned plus and minus.  I learned division.  I learned about the number googolplex with Ms. Mary Lynne.  I learned everything.  It’s easy, cool, and fun.  I learned how to make tornadoes in the water bottles.  Recess was fun because I learned how to move my body.  I learned not to litter in science.  My favorite thing was Biofeedback.  Biofeedback makes me calm. I finished Biofeedback and learned that compassion solves your problems.  I learned how to climb trees and break off branches.  When Mr. Arnold got here was good.  Frankie is funny, Katie is cool.  I will miss Mr. Arnold.  I liked going to Stone Mountain, and getting lost in the fog.  I felt like I was flying on the clouds.

I have laughed a lot because people tell jokes.  My favorite joke is “Hey, what’s up?  The ceiling!”  It’s my favorite joke because I made it up.  I love giving hugs to my teachers because it’s sweet.

I had fun at the Holiday party.  It was fun eating food with the teachers, friends and my parents.  I helped decorate.  In the talent show I read a story about Santa Claus and that Saint Nicholas was the first Santa.  All my friends and I danced.  I had a good time doing the Macarena.  It was a lot of fun.

Another thing that makes me smile is playing dodge ball with my friends.  It was interesting.  The teachers would throw the big red ball at the students.  I could hear the sound of throwing, people laughing, and “bet you can’t get me!”  We played dodge ball outside in the courtyard.

I am going to miss my teachers and how they make me laugh, and how they teach me math.  I am going to miss my friends because they’re nice, sweet, and kind.  I hope to see the teachers again soon.  I love my teachers and friends at school and will miss them a lot.  It was fun to be here.
